Yamatoya Honten is located in the centre of Dogo Onsen, which is said to be Japan's oldest hot springs. Boasting a 250 year long history, Yamatoya offers a contemporary approach to hospitality while preserving historical traditions.

The name "Dogo Onsen" appears in Japan's oldest history record, "Nihon Shoki" (A Chronicle of Japan), making it perhaps the oldest hot spring town in Japan. The Yamatoya Honten was founded in 1868, and is situated right next to the symbol of this hot spring town, the Dogo Onsen Honkan bathhouse. Renovated in 1996, we welcome our guests with a contemporary approach to hospitality while preserving the historical traditions of a Japanese inn (ryokan). ※Reservations can be made up to one day in advance. ※All reservations are without meals. I finally made it to 'Yamatoya Honten'. As I was traveling alone, it was a bit disappointing to have a single room, but it is indeed an old and high-class Japanese-style inn. One of the enjoyable aspects is the large bath located in the basement. Welcome orange juice (self-serve) Sake and snacks after the bath. And a Noh stage. You can have plenty of fun even with just the room, and breakfast is available with a reservation the day before.

I stayed at Daiwa-ya Main Store for 2 days and 1 night during the extreme cold wave. To efficiently enjoy the sightseeing spots and gourmet foods, I researched in advance and visited 8 tourist attractions and 5 gourmet spots. There were three points that led me to choose this hotel as my base: 1. Convenient transportation 2. Located in Dogo Onsen area 3. Comprehensive services 4. Hot springs 1. Convenient transportation There are limousine buses running directly from Matsuyama Airport to Dogo Onsen, making it easy to reach in one go. Additionally, there are streetcars, which are convenient for sightseeing around Matsuyama city before heading to Dogo Onsen. There are also buses from Dogo Onsen back to Matsuyama Airport. The sheltered arcade between Dogo Onsen and the station is a blessing on rainy days or when the sun is strong. 2. Located in Dogo Onsen area The hotel is about a 2-minute walk from Dogo Onsen Honkan, making it an ideal base for sightseeing. It's easy to get to the free foot baths, Asukanoyu, Izanami Shrine, and Enmanji Temple from here. 3. The Closest Inn to Dogo Onsen

The location is unparalleled, right next to Dogo Onsen. Being able to access the not crowded Dogo Onsen at 6 a.m. in a matter of seconds is a significant advantage. Besides food hunting, you can easily return to the inn after buying souvenirs, and if you get tired, you can relax in your room. There's also a basket for onsen hopping, and it's thoughtful that you can bring along towels and other items. It's great for a foot bath, too. The onsen in this ryokan is also magnificent and charming, I enjoyed it three times! After bathing, there are candy corners and alcoholic beverages, and in the lobby, there's a service for tap mandarin juice. The room had a massage chair that elevated my spirits. It's perfect for a tired body. Sufficient amenities are placed in the hallway. The staff members were all wonderful people with beautiful smiles, truly representing a long-established ryokan. On the fourth floor, there is a Noh stage where you can borrow small items for pictures and have fun, and there's also a foot bath café to enjoy. In the closet, there were emergency supplies for disasters, showing a high level of awareness.

We stayed at this ryokan in Dogo Onsen. You can also utilize half. Since there are few parking spaces in front of the ryokan, if you hand over the key at the front desk, they will move your car for you. At the front desk, of course, in Ehime, you can get orange juice straight from the tap! The guest room had a massage chair that could be used freely. Being Dogo Onsen, of course, there’s an outdoor bath, and in the relaxation room, you can enjoy unlimited sake, umeshu, and snacks, so both adults and kids can enjoy! The restaurant has a Noh theater stage, and you can take commemorative photos with costumes and props. Of course, you can also enjoy Dogo Onsen outside, and you can rent outing goods like towels and kimono to fully enjoy the onsen.

It took about 5 to 10 minutes from Dogo Onsen Station through Haikara (shopping street)✨ I was strolling while looking at the shops, so I’m not sure of the exact time, haha. There is a Dogo Onsen Main Hall nearby, along with souvenir shops and restaurants, making it a convenient hotel for visiting hot springs and anywhere else(^^) Room There is a massage chair✨ Mineral water and Japanese sweets are provided✨ Amenities are of the self-service type✨ There is a mirror available for borrowing, which is nice✨ Please bring your own skincare items as they are not provided✨ Facilities ✅ Unlimited mikan juice ✅ All-you-can-eat snack and alcohol bar Two types of alcohol and one type of non-alcoholic plum wine Many nostalgic snacks like Umaibo ✅ The onsen♨️ is really relaxing It's the same source as Dogo Onsen ✅ I recommend adding breakfast My pick is the seafood bowl🍣 You can also just have sashimi❣️ Mikan juice tasting🍹 There’s also sparkling wine available🍷 Great for alcohol lovers to drink from morning❤️ Oh, it was delicious✨ ✅ There is a foot bath cafe for a fee A soothing hotel I want to visit again🎵

The Best Stroll in a Historic Hot Spring Town

Perfect for strolling around Dogo Onsen. It's a retro and classic atmosphere accommodation. - You can enjoy enough in the hot spring within the inn, but they lend you a 'yukago' (basket for carrying hot spring towels) for strolling around. Carrying the yukago, you can visit different hot springs, climb the long steps to Yu-jinja Shrine, or casually stop by a café to enjoy Dogo Beer, which was fantastic. - When I went, there was a sake bar and a traditional candy bar. - The single room was a simple Western-style room, adequate and satisfying. I was pleasantly surprised that the coffee was local coffee! - I booked through HAFH and had a no breakfast plan, but there are cafés that open early around, so I wasn't worried about breakfast. "Shirasagi Coffee" in front of Dogo Onsen Station was lovely and delicious, and the Starbucks inside the station building matched the town's atmosphere very well. Walking through Dogo Onsen’s shopping street early in the morning was refreshing.

The Yamato-ya main store in Ehime was truly a heavenly place! ・1-minute walk from Dogo Onsen. ・Uses the same source as Dogo Onsen. ・Orange juice comes out of the tap 🍊. ・Unlimited sake 🍶. ・Unlimited snacks and Umaibo. ・Massage chair in the room 😌. ・Luxurious lounge ✨. ・Manga corner related to Ehime, including Aoashi. ・Memorial photo on the Noh stage. There were so many enjoyable elements here that I could spend forever! In fact, I enjoyed sake with Umaibo as a snack while napping in the massage chair. I stretched my legs to Okaido only at night for dinner, and after returning, I headed straight to the inn's hot springs. I also took a morning bath and spent the rest of the time lost in Aoashi until check-out. It was the best stay-at-home inn where I wanted to stay even a second longer!

The inn is located just past the shopping street after getting off at Dogo Onsen Station. It’s only a minute from the main building of Dogo Onsen, so waiting early in the morning is not difficult at all. 😂 After enjoying a morning bath, I returned for breakfast (at an extra charge) where I could taste various local dishes, which were delicious. The on-site hot spring is also a great experience, and the sake tasting and snack corner felt like a summer festival.

A Long-established Inn in Dogo Onsen Town

I stayed at this hotel for one night. There is a hot spring inside the hotel that allows for relaxation. Additionally, they lend out towels for enjoying Dogo Onsen. This way, I could head out to the Dogo Onsen town within walking distance and enjoy the classic old hot springs and foot baths. I really wanted to have breakfast at the hotel, so I ordered it. Everything was delicious, but the most impressive was the grilled fish paste (jakoten) prepared on an iron plate. I believe ordering breakfast heightened my experience at the facility.
