From Ryugen to Ryugon In the summer of 2019, Ryugon was reborn as an inn "Ryugon" to experience the climate of the heaviest snowfall area in Japan. It is an intersection between the fresh nature born from the pure white world, the people who live there, and travelers from all over the world. A place where you can experience the blessings of snow all day long in landscapes, architecture, food, art, activities, events, etc. Indoors, we provide hospitality to enjoy the tranquility of the satoyama throughout the four seasons and spend a relaxing time. Ryugon believes that the buildings that preserve the memory of "Ryugon" and the smiles of the people involved in them are important things that will lead to the future of Snow Country. Every winter, more than 2 meters of snow accumulates, and wild plants sprout in the mountains in the spring when the snow melts. In summer, the blue sky sparkles in the rice paddies, and in autumn, the golden ears of rice sway in the wind. The life and culture of this land have been carried out in such a circumstance of the four seasons. I hope that everyone you meet in this place will be able to spend a special time thinking about this endless time. I arrived at the inn a bit late but was warmly welcomed, which was nice. It felt like a lovely inn that had been renovated from an old ryokan, providing a blend of charm and modernity. The large public bath included a sauna, and the open-air bath offered a great atmosphere with views of snow walls. There was also a free private bath available if it was vacant, which was small but satisfactory. I didn’t opt for breakfast, but the lounge service provided chocolate Danish pastries, cookies, and coffee for a light breakfast. The snowy season was beautiful, but I’d love to come back when there’s no snow.

Healing Time at a Traditional Japanese Inn in a Rice-Producing Area

We visited a renovated traditional house at the foot of Sakado Mountain in the rural landscape of Minami Uonuma as a couple. As we passed through the gate facing the road, the left side featured a building with a café, dirt kitchen, and bicycle rental space, while the right side was the accommodation building. The hotel was designed with a depth you could hardly imagine from the entrance, and the 16 buildings, as we heard, had slightly different angles, giving a spacious feeling. Additionally, the area was surrounded by ponds, and walking to the room while enjoying the view of the pond provided a sense of elegance. Check-in was conducted in a room next to the dirt entrance with a large round sofa, and once check-in was complete, a staff member guided us to our room. On the way to the room, there was a lounge where we could enjoy drinks such as coffee, tea, and lemon water, as well as hot spring buns and snacks, which we utilized many times during our stay. The items varied depending on the time of day, particularly between 5 PM and 7 PM when umeshu (plum wine) and local sake were offered as aperitifs, which we thoroughly enjoyed. The room we stayed in was a villa suite with an open-air hot spring bath, creating a very relaxing atmosphere. In addition to the open-air bath, there was also a Japanese-style bath (which was not a hot spring). Moreover, there was a TV in a raised area with a bean bag, making it cozy to relax. Amenities were well-equipped, and skincare products provided were in pouches (collaboration goods with the hotel and sake maker 'Hakkaisan'), so it would have been fine to come empty-handed. The refrigerator had free drinks, including Ebisu beer and soft drinks. In addition, there were fair-trade coffee beans and a grinder, and having freshly ground coffee on the terrace while overlooking the pond was a blissful moment. The HafH plan did not include meals, but we made a reservation for dining via a message in the app. For dinner, we chose a course with wagyu and nodoguro, but it might be a bit insufficient for younger people. For us, a couple in our late 50s, the portion size was just right. And! They informed us that the rice had changed to new rice from the previous week, and the special rice from the region was nothing short of delicious! The rice cooked in an earthen pot was entirely consumed. Haha. Breakfast was also served in the same place as dinner. My husband had Japanese food, while I chose Western food, but given that this is a rice-producing area, I definitely preferred the Japanese meal. I regretted choosing Western food. The staff's service was also very good, allowing us to spend our time comfortably.

Solo Travel: Hokans – Using Shinkansen and Train (with Shuttle Service)

I used this hotel for a Hokans trip. I wanted to escape to a cool place in Niigata during the summer and chose this hotel that had caught my interest for a while. I took the Shinkansen to Echigo-Yuzawa Station, then transferred to a train to Muika-machi, and walked for about 20 minutes to reach the hotel. I arrived in time for check-in, where I received a detailed explanation of the facilities. 【Hot Spring】 I stored my luggage in my room and immediately went to the large communal bath. Since no other guests were checking in yet, I was able to enjoy the bath and sauna privately. *Note that the sauna cannot be used in the morning of the following day. There are private baths available, but they are not reservation-based, so it depends on timing. 【Meals & Light Snack Service】 As the plan did not include breakfast or dinner, I requested an additional dinner. The communication via messaging was smooth, and I added the summer limited grilled sweetfish. The rice was incredibly delicious, and since seasonal ingredients were plentiful, I highly recommend adding dinner at the hotel. In the morning, I took advantage of the free services listed below, so I didn't need to get any extras. 【Services】 The free services offered at the facility were quite plentiful. Free drinks (coffee, tea, lemon water) Snacks (senbei, mini dorayaki, home pie, etc.) Sake & umeshu (served as a before-dinner drink) Cookies and bakery items (served only in the morning) I was also pleased that the amenities were from OSAJI, which is nice for women. There are several relaxing spaces separate from the rooms. On the second day in the morning, I enjoyed coffee and read a book outside, which was especially pleasant. It seemed that other guests also didn’t use these spaces before breakfast, so I had it all to myself. If you're going, be sure to enjoy the sunrise there. At check-in, I confirmed the shuttle service and took advantage of a free shuttle to Echigo-Yuzawa Station at 11 o'clock. Although the travel time was about 30 minutes, the driving was very careful. Before getting in the car, I chatted with the staff, and they were all very polite, so I was very satisfied with my experience. I would love to stay at this accommodation again.

A Relaxing Onsen Trip for His Birthday

At first glance, it appears to be facing the road, but once you enter, the atmosphere changes completely. Every corner of the building was beautiful and elevated my spirits. I chose a CLASSIC D room, which was spacious enough for a relaxing stay. The food was incredibly delicious! Everything was tasty for both dinner and breakfast, but the rice was particularly impressive…! There were offers of snacks and drinks, and the lounge service was a delightful bonus. I requested in advance for a cake to be brought to our room, and we were able to celebrate the birthday!
